Before you register for first semester classes, we'll need more information about your background and experience in Math, Second Language, and Writing to make sure you are in the right classes for you and your major.
That's what placement is for!
Placements are not tests with "pass" or "fail" scores. Instead, they help make sure you're not accidentally locked into courses that are too easy -- or too hard -- for you.
Already have Math, Second Language, and/or Writing credit or scores? Visit Next Steps Center to explore your options!
Go to Next Steps Center
The placement pages in your Next Steps Center dashboard will guide you through the process, letting you know which placements you may — or may not — need to take.
Review the information presented on the page. You'll see your current, overall Math Placement status and much more!
Pay special attention to your options in the Action Items or Review Your Options boxes. Follow the instructions listed for what option applies to you.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the red "Mark as Viewed" button.
A "Math Placement" status will now appear in your "My Progress" box on the dashboard
First Year Students: If the status says "Complete," you are good-to-go! If it says "Action Required," click the link to return to the Math Placement page and follow the instructions in the Action Items box.
Transfer Students: The status will say "Complete" because you have now reviewed the page and are following the instructions that applied to you. This is the final status of the page.
Review the information on the page. You can take the Language Placement Exam (LPE) for any of the languages listed, or you can review all of the alternative options available (such as submitting credit, test scores, and more!)
Click the red "Mark as Viewed" button on the bottom of the page.
A "Second Language Placement" status will now appear in your "My Progress" box on the dashboard
The status will now say "Reviewed" with links to either take the LPE or explore your other Second Language Placement options.
If you decide to take the LPE, this status will update within 48 hours. It will say "Complete" and display your Second Language Placement course result. You are good-to-go!
If you decide to choose another Second Language Placement option, this status will remain as "Reviewed" and it will not update. Please note: This means we know you have reviewed the information and that you are pursuing any alternative options (sending in credit, scores, etc) that apply to you. The "Reviewed" status is the final, correct status if you are not taking the LPE.
Review the information and follow the instructions on the page. Click the red "Mark as Viewed" button.
A "Writing Placement" status will now appear in your "My Progress" box on the dashboard
If the status says "Action Required," click the link to submit the online questionnaire. (No need to stress: The FWE is not a test!)
The FWE will ask questions and help you self-select the Writing course that best applies to you.
If you have Writing dual enrollment/college credit or scores, you can also report this information in the questionnaire!
Transfer students: The FWE will also let you know if you've already satisfied the Foundations Writing requirement!
Once you've submitted the FWE questionnaire, the "Writing Placement" status will update within 48 hours with a green "Complete" status, as well as your result. You are good-to-go!
